Simple Overcomes GED Proportions

Proportion is word used in math to mean two equal fractions. Fraction A equals fraction B. What is sneaky is that both fractions have the same ratio! But they seldom look the same. Here’s an example: 1.A cook made pancakes from the following recipe. ½ cup of flour, 2/3 cup of sugar, and ¾ cup of water. The made two pancakes. How much water would be need for twelve pancakes? Your answer should be 4 and a half cup of water. Yes, there are more than one way to solve the problem. Simple prefers to know one that always works. That mnemonic is: Make the ratios equal the cross multiply and divide the unknown.

  • Pancakes?Water The ratios equal.
  • 2?3/4 x 12?x Both ratios cross multiply.
  • (2x = (3?4 x 12)) ÷ 2 Division of the unknown.
  • x = 4.5 Now the answer.

That was not too difficult for Simple. The GED for Simple used to be hard because what Simple needed to know he didn’t. Actually he couldn’t recall it! Now he can. Instead of having the whole problem in his mind he has an understandable part to deal with. Simple wants me to mention that the answers to a question on the GED test are correct if you do a problem the wrong way. This helps you feel real good about yourself since your answer matched an answer given even if it was wrong. Beware of answers that are numbers from the question. In our question one, the number twelve. The GED math test is a standard test. So they have to hide the correct answer in plain sight surrounded by plausible answers otherwise you see the correct answer! Simple doesn’t like that when it happens. Simple says the recipe above is not a pancake recipe! He definitely don’t want you to waste you time trying it out. He will return with another story about the secret ways of the GED test. I promise you I will keep him under control the next time we meet. He gets a big kick out of meeting public on the Internet.
