The First Year of High School

First Year in High School

The majority of parents whose first child is about to enter secondary education is not fully aware of the enormous change their first born is about to make.  It is in this second phase of education that children graduate from trusting, and innocent little people to fast growing individuals who believe they can now take control of their lives and begin to resent any form of authority. Many become disobedient, thinking and actually believing they know it all. Who demand an answer for every question and every situation; their most famous words are

Why?  Why not? Whatever, Do I have to? I know I know………’

At the same time they resent taking responsibility for their own actions and expect parents to do everything for them.

Admittedly this does not happen in the first six month of High School. It is a slow gradual process which very often catches parents unaware:  by the end of the first year the young innocent little angel has begun to change, both in body shape and personality.

As we all know, in secondary school the education the children go through it vastly different. No longer one class and one teacher, instead a series of classes with a different teacher in each one.

With the help provided by their Year 8 friends who have become seasoned ‘High School intellect’ and only too happy to pass on information about the teaching staff, the new Year 7′s quickly learn which teacher has difficulty controlling classes from the teachers that  does not put up with any nonsense. Armed with this formidable power, they work accordingly; hardly anything in one class and 80 to 100% in the other class.

Regrettably this is not all, and parents must also realize that in this new educational environment more sinister dangers lurk, not only in the class rooms where reciprocal behavior changes, but more so outside the class room.

In ‘High School’, the Year 7′s are now mixing with much older students and unfortunately not all of them have a good reputation or intentions. Their main objective is to recruit new members for their shady deals. The children with a weaker character and not so able to stand up for themselves soon fall victim to these manipulating individuals who give the younger one a false sense of superiority for having been chosen to join their group or gang.

Some parents may ask ‘What are teachers doing to stop this?’

‘Why aren’t teachers more vigilant and inform parents

The truth is teachers do attempt to put a stop to unacceptable behavior in their classroom but unfortunately this is as far as they can go. During recess and lunch time students roam the school grounds and it is here that students control the domain.  Teachers on duty have designated areas to patrol and must make sure that their presence deters any fights or obvious bullying.

In many cases teachers have contacted parents and voiced their concerns, but only to be accused of victimizing the student. When this happens once, teachers become hesitant to pass on information.

It is the parents who must be vigilant towards any changes. Get to know who the ‘new friends’ are and if not satisfied investigate and take measures to stop what is not expectable behavior on its tracks. Now, unless the parent is ready to take control from the very beginning, it is a certainty that many of them will be in for a very rough ride for the next three to four years. It is from day one that strict supervision alongside surveillance should be applied.
