Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund Announces 2009 Scholarship Recipients
Athens, Ga. – Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund (JRF) is excited to announce that 80 women have been selected for JRF scholarships for the 2009 school year.
Sources of educational support are more difficult for students to find in 2009 due to funding cutbacks and the economy. More than 800 women applied to JRF for financial aid this spring, an increase of 39% from 2008.
JRF’s goal to award 80 scholarships in 2009 will be reached thanks to contributions from many generous donors who understand the value of education in breaking the cycle of poverty. Each JRF scholar will receive a $2000 award that can be used for tuition, books, rent, car payments or other living expenses while she is enrolled in vocational school or college.
All JRF scholars are low-income, and all have overcome challenges. Many are single mothers who are juggling school, work and family responsibilities. Some have survived domestic violence, coped with disabilities, death of a family member or overcome drug and alcohol addictions. JRF aims to help these women as they pursue their educational goals in order to better their lives and the lives of those around them.
Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund was chartered in 1976 and honors the first woman elected to U.S. Congress. JRF provides scholarships to low-income women age 35 and older who have a vision of how their education will benefit themselves, their families and their communities. Since 1978, JRF has awarded more than $1.3 million to more than 600 women nationwide. For more information or to see the list of scholarship recipients, visit www.rankinfoundation.org.
